Kintsugi & The Art of Repair: Artist Workshop
27 July, 2025
10am - 3pm
Join Chutzpah exhibiting artist Hedy Ritterman and acclaimed Kintsugi artist Yoko Kawada for a meditative and hands-on workshop.
Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, embraces imperfection, honouring cracks as part of an object’s unique history rather than flaws to be concealed. Through this immersive experience, explore the profound connections between art, memory and repair, while engaging in a practice that reflects resilience and renewal.
Participants will be guided by Yoko Kawada in the history, philosophy and process of this art form, learning the introductory technique of Kintsugi mending, using safer and accessible materials (epoxy, lacquer and gold metal powder). Each participant will bring home a piece of Kintsugi art and the skills to be able to start practising themselves.
This workshop also includes a tour of CHUTZPAH: Spirit. Recollection. Self. led by Hedy Ritterman.
Please note: No prior experience is necessary and all tools and materials will be supplied, including one small ceramic piece per person that is suitable for the workshop. Participants will not be repairing other items. Participants must be over 18 years old. This workshop is not recommended for pregnant women and no food and drink is allowed during the workshop.
Places are strictly limited.

Kintsugi:
Kintsugi is the mindful Japanese art of mending and way of giving new life to broken objects. It is a century-old Japanese craft where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using ancient Urushi lacquer and gold dust based on the philosophy of Wabi Sabi- finding beauty in imperfection. The process transforms much-loved worn items into a beautifully crafted new piece of art. A sustainable practice, it allows for the rescue of objects which would otherwise be discarded.
