In Conversation: October 7 Through the Cartoonist's Eye

Marking the third anniversary since October 7, join us for a special morning of commemoration and conversation as we consider the human, social and cultural impact of a day that continues to reverberate across the globe.

Join award-winning and acclaimed political cartoonist for The Australian John Spooner, in conversation with journalist and author Julie Szego, as they explore the Australian political and social landscape in the wake of October 7, including the media’s response to the Hamas atrocities and unfolding events.

For decades, Spooner’s cartoons have offered sharp insight into the nation’s political and cultural conversations. Following October 7, his work has responded powerfully to the events of that day, the rise of antisemitism and the broader public discourse that has emerged in Australia and around the world.

The Jewish Museum of Australia is honoured to be the recipient of a collection of Spooner’s original cartoons created in response to October 7 and its aftermath. The cartoons attest to Spooner’s sharp eye, critical mind and skilled work, while documenting the challenges posed by rising antisemitism and the often-contentious public debate that has followed.

In this special conversation, Spooner and Szego will discuss the role of political cartooning in times of crisis, the responsibilities of the media and how artists and commentators can help shape public understanding of complex and confronting events.

Doors will open at 7:45 for an 8am program start. Light refreshments will be available.
