JMA x The Jewish Quarterly – Cast Out: Objects, Voices & Music of the Jews of the Arab Lands

28 May 2026
Thursday 6.30 - 8pm
Jewish Museum of Australia

“For all the attention that conflict in the Middle East attracts, the casting out of almost a million Jews from what is today the Arab world barely registers.” —Lyn Julius, author of ‘Cast Out: The History of the Jews of the Arab Lands’.

Experience an evening of story, sound and history, inspired by The Jewish Quarterly’s latest issue, ‘Cast Out: The History of the Jews of the Arab Lands’ by Lyn Julius. Bringing to life the overlooked exodus of Jewish communities from the Middle East and North Africa through testimony, Museum objects and live music, explore the stories and legacies of these communities.

Discover the essay by TJQ contributor Lyn Julius and hear from Iraqi-born artist Aloma Treister as she shares her story of family and displacement, alongside Museum Collection objects that trace Mizrahi and Sephardi life. Celebrate the rich Mizrahi cultural heritage with live performance by Yuval Ashkar and ensemble, whose music evokes the soundscapes of these lost worlds.

Doors open at 6pm for 6.30pm start. Copies of The Jewish Quarterly will be available for purchase. Ticket includes a free drink upon entry.
