Inge King, (b.26/11/1918, Berlin; arr. Aust. 1951)
Sculptor
Studies Berlin Academy, 1937-38; RA Schools (scholarship), London, 1940; Glasgow School of Art (bursary), 1941-43. A leading contemporary Australian sculptor, her sophisticated abstract steel sculptures range from the monumental to the domestic and have appeared in most important Australian sculpture exhibitions since 1950. She taught art in Glasgow and London, 1944-49, married Graeme King, and worked as a jewellery maker and sculptor during her first years in Australia. She held more than 40 solo exhibitions 1949-2006 in London, Melbourne (Powell St; Realities; Uni. Gallery, Uni. MeIb.; Australian Galleries), Sydney (Coventry, Bonython-Meadmore), Adelaide (BMG) and at Deakin Uni., Geelong, 1990; she has also held numerous joint exhibitions with Grahame King. A major exhibition of the Kings’ work toured regional galleries, 1975-76, and lnge King: Small Sculptures and Grahame King: Master Printmaker and Painter were held at McClelland, 2004. Retrospectives and surveys of her work have included those at the NGV, 1992, and Bendigo Art Gallery, 1995. She received dozens of notable major commissions including Forward Surge outside the Vic. Arts Centre, Melbourne; for Uni. Melb.;
at McClelland Gallery; and Wandering Angel, NGA, 2000.
