| Born
in Vienna in 1920, Yosl Bergner migrated to Australia in 1937, and than
to Israel (wherehe
now lives) in 1950. A scholarship to the ational Gallery
School of Victoria was terminated when
he refused to accept the teaching,
but this did
not stop him from becoming one of the most important Australian
artists of the post war period. His social realist paintings of this period are prized as major contributions to Australian art, and are in the collections of all the major public galleries in Australia, as well as in important overseas collections. He returns regularly to Australia where he continues to exhibit. |
