Education Programs – Standard

These programs cost $8 per student

In the Basket:
This is a hands on activity - many items associated with the Jewish Religion are brought in to the learning centre in a basket.

• In pairs students are given an object to explore, they touch it,
  open it, try it on.
• They are asked to draw the object
• With their picture in hand the students go in to the museum to
  discover what their object is called and what  it is used for and how it is made.
• Later on in the visit, each pair is asked to present their findings to the rest of the group.

Year Level 4 - 8

Storytelling:
Each of the festivals has an associated story. This is great strategy to learn about the
beliefs and practises of the Jewish Religion.

• Our guides will tell/read the story and then explain the way in which the festival is celebrated.
• Visit the Jewish Year Gallery and see exhibits for all of the festivals in a year.

Year Level 2 - 5

Ritual Reporter:
Using investigation cards to explore current religious practices, students present their findings to their peers.

Year Level 8 – 10

                Communication, Thinking.

 

Kabbalat Sabbath:
On Friday night in many Jewish Homes a traditional ceremony takes place to indicate the commencement of the Sabbath. Witness this timeless ritual with your own eyes. We lay the table, light the Sabbath candles, make and explain the blessings over the grape juice and ceremonial bread which are then served to you.

A simple and tasty way for students learn about the Sabbath and its significance to Jewish people.

 

Year Level 2 – Tertiary

Is it Kosher?
Is there more to it than not eating pork? Find out about the complexities of Jewish dietary laws and food preparation.
Using a DVD, everyday products and menus and our experienced guides, you learn about the secrets of the kosher table.

Synagogue Tour
Visit the historic St Kilda Synagogue as part of the Museum experience. Our guide will take you in to this magnificent building, answer questions about Judaism and explain the way the synagogue is used and managed in the C21.

Education Programs – Special

These programs cost $10 per student

 

Mock Wedding:
Learning and engaging with Judaism through interactive role playing. Students are cast into roles and participate in a wedding ceremony. Our “Rabbi” “marries” the bride and groom and instructs the congregants in the Jewish attitude to marriage and “celebration”.

Costumes, music, Israeli dancing, grape juice for toasting the bride and groom etc. are provided for this special and unique production.

Year Level 6 - 10

Mock Passover Feast:
The table is set as if for a feast: ceremonial foods are provided to taste.

Some students are given a script and a role for this event – but everyone gets to taste. We explain about the order of this special festival, and tell the tale of the ten plagues using a dramatic script and props. If you are willing, we can send you a song to learn.

Year Level 5 - 11

Food Tasting:
Taste a variety of traditional foods; hear the stories about their associated festivals and how modern Jewish families celebrate these annual milestones.
