11 April 2010 – 13 March 2011 Theresienstadt: Drawn from the Inside
Works from the Jewish Museum of Australia Collection
Original drawings and watercolours
that were created in Theresienstadt
by Paul Schwartz and Leo Lowit reveal a triumph of the human spirit. Fortified by high walls and a moat, the historic town of Terezin was turned into a ghetto by the Nazis during World War II and was used a way-station en route to the death camps. Manipulated to deceive the world about their mistreatment of the Jews, the town
had a hidden side. Through these works the exhibition explores the many layers
of duplicity engendered in these extraordinary times.

Hanna Kay, Undertow
Regional Art Gallery touring exhibition
The artworks inthe exhibition incorporate photographs of the gravestones in the Maitlandiewish cemetery with paintings and drawings of landscape motifs, creating sequences of images which suggest a passage of time and give a sense of journey. The exhibition undertow
is not about documenting an historical event, or an anthropological phenomenon, rather it attempts to look for a different way of thinking about people’s wanderings; another way of engaging with issues impacting on our lives — migration and displacement. Kay’s response
to the subject has been intuitive, following personal associations and references to both migration and Judaism.
