This art exhibition Bal Taschit – Thou Shalt Not Destroy shows artworks that are creative responses to environmental issues and related texts from the Hebrew Bible.

In the Midrash Rabba: Ecclesiastes 7:13 God forewarns “…….be careful not to ruin and destroy my world, for if you do, there is no one to repair it after you.”

Visiting student groups to the Jewish Museum of Australia will be first shown around the Museum’s exhibitions, after which they can enjoy some creative thinking and expression in one of our workshops.

Please let our education coordinators know which workshop you wish your students to experience:

  • Ethical Shopping
When shopping, which products should be chosen ethically, based on their packaging, food miles, chemicals, processing, food safety standards and testing on animals.
  • Art, artists and responding to change
By examining the artworks in Bal Taschit, students explore the role of these artists as social commentators who, through their creative responses, bring to our attention current environmental issues.
  • Torah talk posters
Students respond creatively to a biblical text and create their own posters.
  • Drama workshop
Based on and influenced by Bal Taschit, students create a dramatic presentation illustrating current environmental issues.
