We are so pleased to announce the extremely talented judges and hosts for 2008:

Nick Batzias:
Nick has been with Madman Entertainment since February 2003 and works in Acquisitions across the Madman slate. This includes short and long form films, across animation, live action and documentary. Nick has a real passion for independent cinema and its key part of his focus for the Madman catalogue. In addition to Licensing, Nick also works across business development and  business affairs for the Madman Group of companies. Nick participates in film festivals and markets such as Cannes, MIPCOM and Sundance. 

Yael Bergman:
Yael has worked as a writer and producer of feature films, documentary, TV comedy and drama. Credits include: Co-writer & Co-Producer of the feature film Love & Other Catastrophes (1996), Script/Story Consultant, The Secret Life of Us (Channel 10, 2002); Writer, ShockJock (TV-1, 2001), Script Editor/Producer's Attachment, We Can Be Heroes (Princess Pictures & ABC s2005); Writer, Closet Tales, 4-part TV-documentary series on 4 Australian fashion designers (Pure Pictures & SBS 2006); Associate Producer, Summer Heights High (Princess Pictures & ABC 2007); and most recently, Producer, The Sounds of Aus: the Story of the Aussie Accent (Princess Pictures & ABC 2007).  This documentary was the second highest rating ABC documentary of 2007. 
Yael has been developing and producing projects for film and television with Princess Pictures for over three and a half years. 

Helen light
Dr Helen Light AM has worked at the Jewish Museum of Australia since 1983 and been Director/Curator since 1991. In this capacity she has curated or overseen over 120 exhibitions, four permanent exhibitions and shepherded the Museum's development into its new premises in 1995. Helen is involved in several professional and governmental bodies. She is currently President of Museums Australia (Vic Branch). She is a Churchill Fellow and a recipient of a Centenary of Federation Medal, a Museum Achiever of the Year Award and an Honorary Associate at Museum Victoria.
Helen has been on the judging panel for Celluloid Soup since the inception of this Festival.

Daniel Sharf:
Daniel Scharf has worked as a producer on quality, documentaries, feature films and television. In 1989 he was the Australian producer on the first German /Australian co-production feature film, “The Prisoner of St.Petersburg”, directed by Ian Pringle, starring Noah Taylor and Solveig Dommartin. In 1990, he was the Australian producer on the French / Australian co-production feature film “Isabelle Eberhardt”, directed by Ian Pringle, starring Mathilda May, Tcheky Karyo and Peter O’Toole. He went on to produce two feature films for Geoffrey Wright, “Romper Stomper” in 1991 which starred Russell Crowe, Jacqueline McKenzie and Daniel Pollock, and “Metal Skin”, in 1993 which starred Aden Young, Ben Medelsohn, Nadine Garner and Tara Morice. Daniel has also co-produced with Jonathan M Shiff the children’s TV series “Cybergirl”, “Pirate Islands”, Wicked Science 1” and “Scooter: Secret Agent”. In 2004 Daniel produced the feature film, “Tom White”, directed by Alkinos Tsilimidos starring Colin Friels.

ANTONIO ZECCOLA
Antonio Zeccola is the Founder, Owner and Managing Director of Palace Films and Palace Cinemas with a 40 year history of distributing quality local and international titles in Australia and New Zealand. He has received credit as Executive Producer of Paul Goldman’s ‘Australian Rules’ and Rolf de Heer’s ‘Alexandra’s Project’, which was officially selected for screening at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2003, where it was nominated for a Golden Bear.

Antonio’s unrivalled commitment to the Australian film industry is best demonstrated by Palace’s investment in numerous locally produced films over the last 10 years. They include such film titles as, Ana Kokkinos’ ‘The Book of Revelation’; Richard Flanagan’s ‘The Sound of One Hand Clapping’; ‘Irresistible’, starring Susan Sarandon and Sam Neil; and ‘Macbeth’ in which the director of Romper Stomper, Geoffrey Wright, brings Shakespeare’s play to gangland Melbourne. Other successful theatrical releases include ‘Lantana’, ‘Chopper’, ‘Japanese Story’, ‘Head On’, ‘Kokoda’, ‘Yolngu Boy’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’.

Palace’s recent film releases include ‘West’, ‘Clubland’, ‘Forbidden Lies’ and the soon to be released ‘Unfinished Sky’ starring William McInnes. Palace’s newest project is ‘Secret River’; based on Kate Grenville’s best selling novel. This riveting story will be brought to the screen by script writer Jan Sardi (Academy Award Winning Writer of ‘Shine’) and Director Fred Scepisi.

Palace Cinemas is Antonio’s exhibition division with 73 screens across 21 locations in 5 states making it Australia’s only truly independent national group of cinemas dedicated to the presentation of quality film. Antonio’s passion for restoring, reinvigorating and saving cinema icons led him to acquire and refurbish the Chauvel Cinema in Sydney and the Westgarth Theatre in Melbourne.

Antonio has been awarded the title “Cavaliere” (like an Italian version of a Knighthood) by the Republic of Italy in recognition of his promotion of Italian culture in Australia.

Daniel Besen
Daniel is an experienced and successful entrepreneur who has a passion for working as a committed business partner with innovative and creative people.
Daniel’s investments have included SEEK, MIMCo, Boost Juice, Strike Bowling Bars and KADAC.  Daniel also has active investment interests in a growing number of property developments.

Daniel’s passion for art and the arts is demonstrated by his sponsorship of the Roger Kemp Memorial Prize,
a yearly prize awarded to final year arts students at the Victorian College of the Arts.  Daniel also supports The Malthouse Theatre, National Gallery of Victoria, Sydney Theatre Company and the Jewish Museum of Australia.

Daniel’s involvement in the arts extends to Board representation, having held the position of Director of the Jewish Museum of Australia, the Melbourne International Arts Festival and Heide Art Gallery.  He was also Chair of the contemporary dance company, Chunky Move.
